Mapping & Orienteering Class
In collaboration with Homeschool Excursions (HSE).
Have you ever wanted to know how to use a compass? Can you look at terrain and draw a map? Do you love exploring nature?
This class will teach participants how to think visually and translate land to map and vice versa. We will make compasses, practice compass skills, and learn about the elusive concepts of declination and solar noon!
Above all, this class will explore the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve, an intown natural gem alongside South Peachtree Creek. We will visit several ecological zones—marsh, creek, pine and hardwood forests, on the lookout for animals and plants. The class starts at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve near the North Dekalb Mall.
