Backcountry Camp Cooking Class
Based on his experience experimenting with more gourmet backpacking food while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Sure Foot’s Jonah McDonald teaches his secrets to backcountry cuisine. No more freeze-dried meals on camping trips.
We first learn the keys to backcountry cooking: taste, weight, calories, nutrition, durability, and difficulty of preparation.
Then, we cook two backcountry meals: Backcountry Shepherds Pie, African Groundnut Stew, Tortillini with Garlic & Tomato Sauce, Indian Curried Lentils, etc. Though the meals are cooked over ultralight camp stoves, the class begins with a fire-building lesson. Participants then learn to cook using only utensils and ingredients available on a long-distance backpacking trip. Once we’ve cooked our meals, we eat and then enjoy s’mores and storytelling around the campfire.
This class usually takes place at Sure Foot’s Camp Ruth in Stone Mountain or can be arranged to be held at one of several trails in north Georgia.
